And while we will certainly be printing the same paper we have since 1886 every Wednesday, there is little doubt that news-gathering and news distribution is moving in a digital direction.

Daily papers are suffering from a lack of advertising and, consequently, have a smaller newshole to fill. Community newspapers like the Countian are still doing well, but with newsfeeds coming not just from the Internet but cell phones and PDAs, more and more people are getting their news from someplace other than the paper.

There are advantages and disadvantages to a weekly paper. On one hand, we get nearly a full week to work and develop stories that happen between Wednesday and Sunday. But then again, everything that happens between those days is, well-developed or not, old news by the time it gets to the paper.

We have made several strides in that direction, with a weekly Web edition and archives dating back to 2002; we started a MySpace site to reach out to a younger audience that, by and large, does not pick up the paper.

And the new Web site will be a big step toward becoming a daily source of central Sussex news, with breaking news stories posted as soon as they are written and updated throughout the course of the week. A newly-designed look will give readers access to multiple sections of the paper that were not available online before. Gatehouse Media’s newsfeeds will bring regional and national news of interest from its family of newspapers.

Basically, we’ll be bringing you way more news online than before, so log onto www.sussexcountian.com and check it out!
