Millsboro’s Major League Softball All-Star team came from behind in the bottom half of the sixth inning Wednesday evening to defeat Woodbridge 4-3 and capture the District III title.
Trailing 3-2 entering its final at-bat, Millsboro got a leadoff double from catcher Mariah Rogers. Derya Sen followed with a walk, which brought Brooke Ward to the dish with runners on first and second and no outs.
With most in attendance thinking Ward would lay down a bunt, the diminutive All-Star instead drilled a game-tying double to center.
“I was pretty nervous before I went up there,” Ward said. “All I wanted was to drive in a run.”
Sen, who moved to third on the two-base hit, scored the game-winning run moments later on a wild pitch and the celebration ensued.
Millsboro, as the District III representative, will play again in the state tournament at Canal Little League on July 14. The All-Stars will face whichever team wins District I (Kent County and New Castle south of the canal) in the first game of that double-elimination tourney. Whichever team emerges at the state level moves onto the East Regional in Bristol, Conn., where the Northeast state champions will battle for a spot in the World Series.
More on Millsboro’s win will be in our July 6 print edition of the Sussex Countian.
