Delmar and Sussex Tech were involved in an old fashion pitchers duel on Monday afternoon.
Both Cody Shupe of Delmar and Tech’s Hunter Absher pitched strong games. Absher’s only mistake was to Delmar’s Brandon Parsons in the bottom of the first inning.
Parsons singled home Kevin Trader to give Delmar an early 1-0 lead, a lead they would not relinquish due to Shupe’s pitching and timely defense.
Late in the game Tech twice found themselves with runners in scoring position with two outs and a chance to tie or even take the lead. However, Shupe buckled down and was able to stifle any thought of extra innings or late-game heroics by the Ravens.
Pitching was definitely the story as the Sussex Tech and Delmar offenses combined for only 6 hits and, of course, the one Delmar run.
The loss for Tech is their first of the season after coming out of the gates hot with four straight wins.
While expectations are certainly there, Tech has shown they can win close games early. Tech won their first four games by a combined 8 runs, including two 3-1 finals, a 1-0 final and their largest margin of victory a 5-2 win over Polytech to open the season.
Even though they’ve made the most of their opportunities so far this season, offensive production may become a problem for the Ravens. Their highest hit total, eight, came against Polytech, coincidentally the Ravens put up their highest run total of the season in that game as well.  Tech was only able to muster four hits in each of their next three games, and only registered two hits against Delmar on Monday.
It’s early and Tech still has time to work out their offensive kinks, with strong pitching and defense behind them Tech could become a very dangerous team if the bats come alive.

A two-out double by Delmar’s Bethany Wheatley in the bottom-half of the 9th inning handed the Sussex Tech Lady Ravens their second loss of the season on Monday.
While Tech scored first, a run in the top of the first inning, and out-hit Delmar 11-8 they couldn’t come up with the run they needed to win the game late. Also, they were unable to take advantage of 6 Delmar errors.
Cassidy Taylor and Kimberly Smith had strong games at the plate for Tech.
Danielle Bradley improved to 3-1 for Delmar who move to 5-1 for the season.
After dropping their first game, an 8-5 decision to Polytech, the Ravens won three straight heading into Monday’s game against Delmar. The loss puts them at 3-2 during the early part of this season.
