Edward “Waples” Johnson, as he was known to his friends, passed away on May 5, 2012 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, MD. He was 79. He was born in Georgetown, Del., son of the late Harry and Emma (Marker) Johnson.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry James Johnson, Jr., and three sisters, Mary Smith, Frances Stockley, and Elsie Willey.
He graduated from Georgetown High School with the class of 1950. Waples served in the United States Air Force for four years during the Korean War. He was a carpentry instructor while stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming and was also stationed for 18 months in Anchorage, Alaska. He was a past member of the Korean War Veterans of Delaware, Chapter 1, for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Joseph) Johnson; a son and his wife, Steve and Donna Johnson of Lancaster, Pa.; a daughter and her husband, Linda and Donald Betts of Bridgeville, Del. He is also survived by two grandsons, Michael Betts of Georgetown, Del. and Kyle Johnson of Hellam, Pa.; two granddaughters, Laina Betts of Laurel, Del. and Jill Johnson of Boston, Ma.; five great-grandsons and a great-granddaughter. Also surviving are three sisters, Bessie Reynolds of Georgetown, Del., Charlotte Collins and Norwood of Milton, and Loreta Workman and Richard of Seaford.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 10, at 9:30 a.m. at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 307 North Bedford Street, Georgetown. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Beebe Home Health Agency, 20232 Ennis Road, Georgetown, DE 19947 or to Cheer Activity Center, 547 S. Bedford St., Georgetown, DE 19947.
