  • Kathleen Fluharty of Millsboro has been named the new field hockey coach at Sussex Technical High School. Known as “Coach KK,” she has coached on every level during the last 30 years. Fluharty replaces Nancy Tribbitt who retired at the end of the school year after being the only field hockey coach for the high school.
Fluharty played Division I field hockey and lacrosse at Northwestern University. She was a three-time All-American in both sports and is a member of Northwestern University’s Athletic Hall of Fame. She has coached girls’ lacrosse at Sussex Tech for the past five years.
“I am anxious to uphold Tech’s mission of excellence,” said Fluharty. “I plan a smooth transition for the team and continuing the top competitive field hockey program at Sussex Tech.”
Sussex Tech won back-to-back field hockey championships in 2009 and 2010.
Fluharty and her husband Kevin have two children. Daughter Maxine is a 2011 graduate of Sussex Tech and was a member of the school’s championship field hockey teams and was named a High School All-American. Maxine is now playing field hockey at the University of Maryland and was part of its field hockey team that won the national championship in overtime last fall. Son David plays lacrosse at the University of Tennessee
Fluharty will also be a teaching assistant in the physical education department at Sussex Tech.
