A Maryland man died Monday from injuries he suffered during a two-vehilce crash near Lewes.
Michael J. Johnson, a 28-year-old resident of Olney, Md., and his 34-year-old brother Jeffrey A. Johnson, of Baltimore, were riding on a 2009 Suzuki motorcycle north on State Route 1 when a 1998 Saturn SC1 coupe pulled directly into their path while attempting to cross the northbound lanes of the highway onto Bay Crossing Boulevard at about 8:20 p.m., police said.
Michael Johnson, who was driving the motorcycle, was unable to avoid a collision and struck the passenger side of the Saturn, driving by 17-year-old Lindsay N. Hetrick of Milton, according to Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.
The Johnsons, who were both wearing helmets, were ejected from the motorcycle and landed in the northbound lanes of the highway.
They were taken to Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, where Michael Johnson died from his injuries. Jeffrey Johnson was later flown to Christiana Hospital where his is being treated for serious injuries, Fournier said.
Hetrick and her passenger, 29-year-old Seaford resident Michael Mather, refused medical treatment, police said.
No charges have been filed, although an investigation into the crash continued Tuesday.
Northbound lanes of Route 1 were closed for nearly four hours Monday evening as police investigated and cleared the crash.
