A 21-year-old Dover man has been charged with second-degree murder for his involvement in the 2009 slaying of a Seaford man, according to state police.
Jermaine M. Zachary was arrested Monday as he arrived for a meeting with his probation officer in Dover, said Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.
Zachary reportedly assisted in a Sept. 25, 2009 robbery attempt that resulted in the shooting death of 40-year-old Seaford resident Robert W. Watkins.
Police said the shooting occurred after Watkins and an unidentified woman drove to a house in the 100 block of Jeffrey Drive in Magnolia just before 3 p.m. with the intent of purchasing a dog.
When Watkins and the woman arrived, Zachary got into the back seat of their vehicle and began discussing the price of the dog, while another man stood outside the passenger side door, police said.
At some point, the man outside the vehicle produced a gun and demanded money from Watkins.
When the woman attempted to drive away, the man fired into the vehicle, striking Watkins, who was in the passenger seat.
Zachary reported jumped out of the vehicle and ran away.
Fournier said Watkins was flown to Christiana Hospital, where he later died from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Fournier said state police detectives reopened the homicide case July 27, although it was not immediately clear how police were able to link Zachary to the crime.
The gunmen in the slaying has not been identified and remains at large, he said.
In addition to second-degree murder, Zachary is charged with two counts of first-degree robbery, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and second-degree conspiracy.
He is being held at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna on a $302,000 cash bond, Fournier said.
Anyone with information about the slaying or the identity of the gunman is asked to call Delaware State Police at (302) 741-2730 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
