  • The Milford Beacon is asking each candidate for Sussex County Council in District 2 and District 3 what they think county government can do to attract more jobs to the area.
This week's response comes from Greenwood Democrat Gary Wolfe, a 49-year-old production supervisor at Merck Animal Health in Millsboro and former Milford school board member.
Wolfe is running for the Sussex County Council District 2 seat, which represents south Milford, Greenwood and Georgetown.
"First, the county has an Economic Development Office that the county uses to promote itself to businesses looking to locate to Sussex County.
Beyond that there are several other opportunities the county can take advantage of to improve the economic outlook for Sussex.
First, the county is not alone in this issue and needs to reach out to state and local municipalities to work on how best to sell the incorporated and unincorporated areas of the county to perspective businesses.
Next, the county needs to work on those issues like high speed communications, waste water, roads, and other key infrastructures to eliminate those road blocks to businesses. They then need to look at the workforce needed by these perspective businesses and work with schools and other agencies to see that the county can provide the right people with right skills to make the businesses successful. Looking closer at the workforce issues, the county needs to work again with others to provide for the needs of the employees, as well making sure they have affordable housing and good schools for their families at home.
If the county can work with and communicate with others to provide these key pieces and provide other incentives to businesses it is possible to bring the higher wage paying jobs to Sussex.
I would like to see the 21st century skills we are teaching our next generation stay in Sussex and Delaware by opening doors for those students."
Responses from District 2 incumbent Republican Sam Wilson and Libertarian candidate Ronnie Fitzgerald will be printed in the coming weeks.
