Douglas Alan Harris, Sr. was born in Middletown, DE on March 26, 1932. He passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, October 23, 2012.
Doug graduated from Middletown High School in 1950 and served in the Navy as a Boiler Tech Second Class on the USS Caperton (DD-650) from 1951-1954 during the Korean War.
He went to work for Diamond State Phone Company until he retired in 1985 from AT&T. He owned several businesses, MOT Communications and Doug's Sharp All, and worked as a crossing guard for New Castle County.
For most of his life, Doug was a firefighter serving with Minquadale, Wilmington Manor and Townsend fire companies. He was very active in the VFW at SGT William Lloyd Nelson VFW Post 3792 in Middletown, for many years where he held various positions.
He spent many hours over the last several years collecting donations for Buddy Poppies to help the homeless veterans of America at Acme, Walmart and the Middletown Farmers Market. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, calling Bingo at the VFW Post and working the bar. Doug was also a member of the Delaware Association for the Blind Athletes (DABA).
Doug was preceded in death by his mother, Grace Harris; his aunts, Frances Harris, Louise Pennewill and Rosalie Keithley; his uncle, Russell Harris and by his wife, Evelyn P. Harris.
He is survived by his previous wife, Joan Simmons; his daughters, Katie Gearinger (Mitch), Sherri Leslie (Roger), Laurie Logan (Mike), Evelyn May Liddicoat (Doug), Patricia Cannon; two sons, Douglas A. Harris, Jr. and Alan Dwayne Harris; his granddaughter, Stacey Cannon and great-grandson, Austin Brown, who lived with him. He will be dearly missed by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm on Friday, October 26 at SGT William Lloyd Nelson VFW Post 3792, 5695 Summit Bridge Road, near Townsend, where a memorial service will begin at 8 pm. Interment will be held 10 am on Monday, November 5 with military honors at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.
