Sussex County government has launched its annual food drive in an effort to put food on the tables for hundreds of local families in need.
Non-perishable food donations can be dropped off a multiple locations in the Georgetown area from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. between now and the end of December. Those locations include the County Administrative Offices building at 2 The Circle, the County Administrative Offices West Complex at 22215 N. Dupont Highway and the Sussex County Airport terminal building at 21553 Rudder Lane.
The food drive also will be at the center of the 29th annual Caroling on The Circle event at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 3.
The historic Old County Courthouse on South Bedford Street and The Circle will serve as the stage for the caroling event, which will feature a visit from Santa Claus. Local singing artists Ed Shockley, Kevin Short and The Reminders will lead the singing, along with the Georgetown Middle School Choir and the El Centro Cultural group.
Attendance is free, although participants are encouraged to make a food donation to "Pack the POD" – a 14-by-7-foot portable storage shed that will be set up on The Circle. In 2011, the caroling event collected more than 29,000 food items and county officials are hoping to equal that amount again this year.
Following the caroling, free cookies and hot chocolate will be available at the Georgetown Fire Company station house at 100 North Bedford St.
In the event of inclement weather, the caroling will be moved inside the fire hall. For more information, please call (302) 855-7700.
