Sussex County Emergency Medical Services held a groundbreaking Tuesday on a new paramedic station that will serve the Long Neck area.
Paramedic Station 106 at 31282 Indian Mission Road off of John J. Williams Highway will allow for more efficient responses to areas currently served by Medic 106, including Long Neck, Angola, Rehoboth Beach, Lewes and Millsboro, officials said.
Medic 106, which responded to more than 2,000 emergencies in 2011, currently operates out of leased space at the nearby Mid-Sussex Rescue Squad.
The $593,000 project will include an energy-efficient, one-story, 1,300-square-foot rancher with an attached 1,200-square-foot garage. The station is slated for completion by April.
The new station will be the second of its kind built by Sussex County EMS. A similar paramedic station opened near Laurel in March 2009.
