Team Delaware defeated Team Maryland 11-10 to win the Governor's Cup Challenge for the third consecutive year.
Basketball fans from the tri-state area had plenty to cheer about this weekend in the Annual Governor's Cup Challenge featuring boys' basketball teams from Delaware, Pennsylvania and the host state of Maryland. The State of Delaware had the most to cheer about, defeating Maryland 11-10 in the three-day tournament held near Salisbury, Maryland at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. This was Delaware's third consecutive victory in the holiday event.
After Thursday's games, Team Delaware and Team Maryland were tied at four wins apiece, as Sussex Central soundly defeated Colonel Richardson 75- 35, but J.M. Bennett defeated Seaford 64-60 in two of the featured games.
On Friday, the Marylanders had the upper hand, taking an 8-5 lead, as Sussex Tech was the only team to score a victory, defeating Pokomoke 66- 58, in overtime. But there were still plenty of games remaining on the final day of competition.
Team Delaware came out on fire on Saturday, winning six of their eight games, to win the Challenge 11-10.
Winners included Woodbridge, Indian River, Delmar, Laurel, and Sussex Central. With the two teams tied at 10 victories apiece, Milford pulled out a 63-57 win over Parkside to take home the trophy.
Several years ago, Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley issued a friendly challenge to Delaware Governor Jack Markell. They wagered a Maryland Smith Island Cake against a Delaware Peach Pie, so Governor Markell will enjoy an extra dessert this holiday season.
