  • CBS affiliate WBOC TV-16 recently awarded one of its ten 2013 Jefferson Awards to Millsboro resident Beth Joyner, a volunteer at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes since 2011.
WBOC reporter Lacee Griffith presented the award to Joyner during a surprise ceremony at the medical center’s Sunshine Café.
“Beth is the epitome of what the word ‘volunteer’ means,” said Lee Halloran, manager of volunteer services at Beebe Medical Center. “She gives of herself and goes above and beyond. She is there whenever we need her, and gets great satisfaction from the work that she does.”
Joyner and her husband Ed both retired from jobs with the Sussex County court system.
During the last two years, Joyner has racked up 550 volunteer hours, including 340 hours in 2012, with the hospital’s patient escort department. She also volunteers at Gull House, Beebe’s adult day care center, as a greeter at the Tunnell Cancer Center and with a literacy group that reads to children in daycare at Beach Babies in Lewes.
The Jefferson Awards were created in 1972 by the American Institute for Public Service to recognize volunteers throughout the country. Today, more than 150 media partners assist the institute in recognizing unsung volunteers in local communities.
