A 27-year-old Millsboro man led police on a short car chase Monday evening before crashing into a ditch near Long Neck.
Michael A. Denney was speeding on westbound John J. Williams Highway about 9:15 p.m. when a state trooper attempted to stop his 1992 Ford Explorer, police said.
Denney reportedly pulled onto the shoulder of the highway, but immediately took off again, leading the pursuing trooper onto Indian Mission Road and then Friendship Road.
Denney ran a stop sign as he made a left turn from Friendship Road to Cannon Road before losing control of his vehicle and sliding into a ditch on the east side of the road, police said.
Neither Denney nor his passenger, 19-year-old Samantha R. Rau of Lewes, were injured in the crash.
Denney is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, disregarding a police officer’s signal, reckless driving, failure to stop at a stop sign, speeding and other traffic related offenses.
He is being held the Sussex Correctional Institute on a $4,550 secured bail, police said.
Rau was issued a police summons for possession of drug paraphernalia and released.
