A 27-year-old Sussex County man arrested Monday after a short police chase near Millsboro is now facing drug-related charges stemming from a Jan. 11 arrest, police said.
Micheal A. Denney was driving a speeding 2003 Mercury Sable on southbound State Route 1 when a trooper stopped the vehicle near the Biddles Toll Plaza in the Middletown-area about 2 p.m. on Jan. 11, according to Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. John Day.
The trooper reportedly determined Denney did not have a valid driver's license and ordered him to exit the vehicle at which time the officer noticed a small wax envelope commonly used to package heroin on the floor of the car.
Police later found 31.1 grams of heroin divided into 1,244 wax envelopes in a bag hidden in the trunk of the car, Day said.
Denny's two female passengers each were issued a criminal summons after police found them in possession of drug paraphernalia.
Denny, meanwhile, was taken into custody, but later released without being charged.
Three days later, Denney led a state trooper on a short police chase from John J. Williams Highway to Cannon Road near Millsboro, after the officer tried to stop him for speeding, according to police.
The chase ended when Denney ran a stop sign and lost control of the 1992 Ford Explorer he was driving on Cannon Road, police said.
At that time, police charged Denney with possession of drug paraphernalia, disregarding a police officer's signal, reckless driving, failure to stop at a stop sign, speeding and other traffic related offenses.
On Wednesday, following an investigation into the source and intended destination of the heroin, police charged Denney with possession of a controlled substance in a Tier 5 quantity, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, driving while suspended, failure to provide proof of insurance and speeding.
Denney is being held at the Sussex Correctional Institution on a $4,550 secured bail in connection with his arrest Monday and an $18,550 cash bail in connection with the charges filed Wednesday, police said.
Police identified Denney as a Millsboro resident on Tuesday and a Rehoboth Beach resident on Thursday.
