Last Thursday, the Delmarva Christian Royals girls squad fell in a heartbreaking overtime loss to St. Thomas More, 51-42.
Ravens Senior Cali Echeverri led the way for the St. Thomas More; posting a game-high 20 points including 2 three’s to give St. Thomas More their third win of the season.
For the Royals, junior Katherine Harmon and sophomore Haley Timko helped lead the way, posting 11 and 10 points respectively in the loss.
The Royals looked to be in good shape in a first half that saw them keep St. Thomas More to single-digit point totals in both the first and second quarters while posting double-digit outputs in each quarter themselves.
After a close first quarter, Delmarva Christian posted a tremendous second quarter scoring 16 points to take a 27-13 lead into the half.
The third quarter was all about defense, for both squads. After a tough first half, the Lady Ravens responded with a stellar defensive effort holding Delmarva Christian to only 2 third quarter points. St. Thomas More’s 8 in the quarter helped trim the Delmarva Christian lead to only 6 headed into the fourth and final quarter.
In the final stanza, the Lady Ravens made another push, posting 19 fourth quarter points. However, the Royals were able to hang tough and keep their hopes alive by forcing overtime.
In the extra session, much like the third quarter, the St. Thomas More defense flexed its muscle once again allowing only one field goal to Delmarva Christian the entire quarter. The Lady Ravens 11 point output in the overtime period was good enough to give them the 51-42 victory.
While it’s been a rough season for the Royals, the experience for a team made up of only one senior is invaluable. Down the line, they may be ready to compete, and if so, they’ll look back to the tough time that made them stronger.
The Royals are back in action on Wednesday when they host St. Peter & Paul High School from Maryland.
