Q What was it like to perform at the presidential inauguration?
A Singing with the Festival Choir was an incredible experience. Being able to share our music with the world was priceless. We had an amazing view of the National Mall and the sea of people with their American flags blew me away. I was very close to the president, seated in a platform above and behind him. I also saw John Legend, Cindi Lauper, Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson, and James Taylor.
Q What do you enjoy most about performing and what are your career hopes or aspirations following college?
A When I perform, I love getting into the character of the piece. Whether it is a French art song or an aria or a sacred choral work, I love conveying the text to the audience as if I am telling a story from the character’s point of view.
After college, I would like to further explore performing cantatas and oratorios, namely Handel’s “Messiah,” as well as start my own voice studio. My fiancé, also a musician, and I would also like to use music as a ministry here in the U.S. and in Germany.
Q How did your education at Sussex Tech prepare you for college and what do you miss most about Millsboro?
A Mrs. Miller’s Digital Publishing tech area taught me diligence and organization and Mr. Redington’s chemistry class prepared me for the workload. I was heavily involved in the music program as a member of the concert band, marching band and concert choir, where my band and choir directors’ love for music was contagious. Mrs. Rose encouraged my pursuit of music and began an after-school women’s choir, Bella Voce, that I really enjoyed being a part of.
I miss my family back home the most. But, a close second has to be Wawa. It is a bit of an obsession.
Q Give us the dirt. Was Beyonce lip sinking during her performance?
A I was sitting on the platform above Beyonce during her performance and loved her unique rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner.” Live or pre-recorded, her performance with the United States Marine Band was outstanding.
