  • Central girls look to continue their run as season draws to a close

  • After below .500 finishes the last two seasons, the Sussex Central Golden Knights girls basketball squad entered the 2012-13 campaign looking to return to their winning ways. So far, they have succeeded, posting a remarkable 11-4 record with only 5 games remaining in the regular season.
Central opened their season with 2 straight losses, since then they have won 11 of their last 13 games which includes two separate winning streaks of 4 games or more.
Leading the way has been a trio of players few teams have rivaled this season. Senior Shamirea Sheppard along with sophomores Jasmine Hudson and Taylor Pritchett have helped carry the load, as all three routinely score in double-digits every game.
Not to be forgotten are the contributions from players like Khadijah Mackey, Emily Truitt and Jada Smack. While they may not show up on the score sheet, their defense and willingness to play team ball has been just as big a part of their success as the points scored by Sheppard, Hudson and Pritchett.
Now, with only 5 games remaining the Golden Knights find themselves in second place within the Henlopen North behind 13-1 Smyrna.
And as luck would have it, the Smyrna Eagles show up on the Central schedule next Wednesday in a battle that could very well determine first place in the Henlopen North.
The last time the two teams met, Smyrna was able to dominate winning by 14 going away. However, that was only the second game of the season, and you see what Central has done since then.
Also ahead for Central is match ups with Henlopen foes Cape Henlopen, Milford and Dover.
Next up, they’ll face a struggling 2-11 Cape Henlopen team on Monday as they look to continue their streak before a very important date with Smyrna.
