  • Members of 4-H Clubs from throughout Sussex County will be heading to the Georgetown-area this month for contests involving public speaking, food and nutrition.
Children and teens between the ages of 9 and 19 will compete in the Sussex County 4-H Public Speaking Contest from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Carvel Research & Education Center at 16483 County Seat Highway on Saturday, Feb. 16.
Competitors in the event will deliver timed speeches on topics of their choosing that typically last 90 seconds to 7 minutes, depending on the age group. An extemporaneous category has been added to this year’s competition that will provide youth in all age brackets the opportunity to speak publicly without preparation or notes.
Judging begins after all speeches have been delivered with winners announced between 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Ribbons and trophies are presented to the top finishers, who will advance to the state-level competition to face 4-H members from Kent and New Castle counties.
The following Saturday, Sussex Technical High School at 17099 County Seat Highway will host the annual Sussex County 4-H Favorite Foods Contest, as well as the Foods and Nutrition Judging Contest.
Starting at 10 a.m., more than 80 4-H’ers between the ages of 5 and 18 will showcase their knowledge of food groups, menu planning, nutrition basics, food safety and healthy food choices.
During the Favorite Foods Contest, the 4-H’ers will enter and prepare recipes of their choice, suggest a meal plan to accompany their recipe and present their food item on a self-designed place setting. Judges then sample the dishes and interview the contestants.
In the separate Foods and Nutrition Judging Contest, the youth will test their knowledge in areas such as consumer education, cooking terms and measuring math.
Awards will be presented to the winners in various age and food categories at 1 p.m.
All attendees will be invited to sample the foods prepared by the children and presented with a cookbook of submitted recipes.
