Sussex Technical High School student Devontay Jones of Laurel accepted the school’s monthly Jefferson Award from schoolmate Lacey Perdue of Millsboro, a member of the Students in Action team.
Jones, who is studying criminal justice, recently completed 134 volunteer hours at Woodbridge Elementary School in Greenwood, where he mentors a fourth-grade student in spelling and math.
Jones hopes to earn a college degree in education and then begin a career as a teacher and coach.
Students in Action is a national youth recognition initiative of the Jefferson Awards program that is designed to pass the tradition of service and volunteerism on to the next generation of young Americans.
