  • A 40-year-old Seaford man is accused of stealing copper wire from a Bridgeville farm’s irrigation system Thursday.
Ronnie L. Rust Jr. was found with several spools of stolen wire and a small amount of cocaine during a traffic stop on Apple Tree Road, east of Bridgeville, sometime after 11:45 p.m., according to Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. Gary Fournier.
Troopers first noticed Rust’s green pick-up truck parked on the side of the road with a white rag hanging from the window, indicating that the vehicle had broken down, Fournier said.
The troopers reportedly became suspicious when they spotted the same truck leaving the area about 15 minutes later, particularly since several irrigation systems on Apple Tree Road have been the target of theft in recent months.
The troopers immediately spotted spools of copper wire in the bed of Rust’s truck and took him into custody, Fournier said.
Rust was reportedly found to be in possession of about 0.2 grams of cocaine and heavy-duty cable cutters.
Troopers later were able to link the wire in his truck to an irrigation system owned by a 74-year-old Bridgeville man, Fournier said.
Rust is charged with two counts of theft over $1,500, possession of burglar tools, criminal mischief, criminal trespass, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and a trio of traffic-related offenses.
He is being held at the Sussex Correctional Institution on a $10,500 secured bond, Fournier said.
