Firefly Friday: Meet Grizzly Bear and ZZ Ward

Last week, Firefly Friday introduced Delta Rae, one of the non-headlining artists that will be performing at this year's Firefly Festival.
This week, meet Grizzly Bear.
Formed in 2002, the band hails from Brooklyn, NY and consists of a quartet of musicians: Edward Droste (vocals, keyboards, omnichord), Daniel Rossen (vocals, guitar, banjo, keyboards), Chris Taylor (bass, backing vocals, various instruments, producer) and Christopher Bear (drums, backing vocals.)
The band's music has a dreamy, hazy quality often leading to Radiohead comparisons, who the band opened up for in the summer of 2008. But, the experimental nature of their sound, which includes the omnichord, an electronic instrument recognized as much for its chiming timbre as for its ties to the 1980's, could also be compared to Wilco's experimental release, "A Ghost Is Born."
However, with no collection of rock anthems, it will be interesting to see where Grizzly Bear winds up in the Firefly schedule. The quartet's second, "Veckatimest," was released in 2009 and subsequently reached number eight on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. The album is considered more accessible for pop listening fans but it doesn't stray so far into mainstream that it loses any of its critical credibility either. Grizzly Bear's latest album, "Shields" was released in September 2012.
Now, meet another non-headliner: ZZ Ward.
Ward is a relative newcomer, whose debut album was just released last October. She performed her first single, a rock goddess anthem that pleads in the most unapologetic (and decidedly un-pathetic) terms that nameless man-stealers should "Put the Gun Down" and leave her man alone.
At 24 years old, Ward has already collaborated with a who's who of producers, including Michael Fitzpatrick of the Fitz and Tantrums (Firefly 2012 alumni). Currently, she's touring with Delta Rae, which includes a stop in Philadelphia at the Theatre of Living Arts Wednesday, March 6 at 7 p.m. General admission tickets are still available for $19.
