Longtime Laurel florist Mable L. O’Neal celebrated her 90th birthday last month with a luncheon attended by nearly 60 family and friends.
Born Feb. 17, 1923, O’Neal was the second of nine children and oldest daughter born to Joseph and Laura McClements of Smyrna.
She married Andrew C. O’Neal of Laurel in 1952 and the couple had two children, Joseph and Carolyn. Today, she has two grandsons, Andy and Randy, and five great-children.
O’Neal began her florist career at Vane’s Florist in Dover at the age of 18, and later Cook and Smith Florist, also in Dover.
In 1960, she and her husband opened O’Neal’s Florist in a remodeled potato house behind their Laurel home. She continued to operate the business after her husband’s death in 1966 until undergoing heart bypass surgery in 2005.
She retired at the age of 2, but still keeps busy crocheting baby afghans for the maternity ward at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital.
