The filing period for candidates in the May 11 Georgetown Town Council election officially opened this month.
Two seats on the five-member Town Council are up for election this year, including the First Ward seat held by Stephen Hartstein since 2011 and the Second Ward seat held by Sue Barlow since 2004.
Any qualified candidate interested in filing for either seat may do so at Town Hall, 39 The Circle, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The candidate filing deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, April 19.
Guidelines For Candidates
Candidates for town council must be at least 21 years old, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Delaware, a resident of Georgetown and a resident of the ward in which they wish to seek office. Proof of residency is required when filing candidacy papers.
Town Council members serve for two-year terms.
The deadline for voters to register in the May 11 municipal election is 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 26.
Voters in town elections must be residents of Georgetown and register with the town, even if they are already registered voters in Delaware. All voters are eligible to vote in town council elections, regardless of the ward in which they reside.
Voters must be at least 18 years old on the date on the date of the election.
Any registered voter who has failed to cast a ballot in the last two consecutive municipal elections will be considered an inactive voter, and must show proof of identity and address prior to voting.
Any voter registered with the town who wishes to vote in the May 11 election by absentee ballot must first obtain an affidavit for absentee voting at Town Hall.
Absentee ballots will be available for pick up at Town Hall or can be mailed starting Monday, April 22.
Absentee ballots must be received by Town Hall no later than 4:30 p.m. on May 20 to be counted.
