Andrew Evan, an eighth-grade student at Millsboro Middle School, has been selected as a Delaware Carson Scholar for 2013.
The Carson Scholars Fund awards $1,000 college scholarships to students in grades 4 to 11 who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities. Scholarship winners receive the honor of being named "Carson Scholars" and are awarded an Olympic-sized medal and a trophy for their school to celebrate their accomplishments.
A student must be nominated by his or her school principal to compete for a Carson Scholarship. Only one student from each school is able to apply, ensuring that each nominee epitomizes academic excellence. Carson Scholars must have a GPA of 3.75 and display humanitarian qualities through community service.
Evan has volunteered as a peer mentor, a peer tutor, an assistant to a teacher at East Millsboro Elementary School and as an altar server at St. Ann's Church. He has also umpired local Little League games. In addition, he is the State Student Council treasurer for middle schools, treasurer of the school's Junior Honor Society and captain of the Millsboro Middle School soccer team. He is also a member of the yearbook staff, Business Professionals of America, Academic Challenge, Odyssey of the Mind and the indoor River Soccer.
