A 32-year-old Millsboro man was apprehended Saturday shortly after robbing the M&T Bank at 31860 Longneck Road.
The incident occurred at 9:34 a.m., police said, when Hakim Drake, 32 of Millsboro, entered the bank displaying what appeared to be a handgun. He was wearing sunglasses and a cloth over the lower half of his face. Drake vaulted the counter and demanded money from three tellers, who complied by turning over cash.
Drake then fled from the bank on foot. Witnesses advised responding troopers that they observed Drake running toward the Longneck Apartments while dropping cash. A trooper searching the apartment complex saw Drake exit his apartment and then immediately retreat back inside, locking the door to the apartment, police said.
Troopers set up a perimeter around the apartment building and evacuated nearby residents. Police were able to contact Drake by telephone. He initially refused to exit the apartment, but after approximately one hour he exited peacefully and was taken into custody without further incident, police said. After searching the apartment, detectives determined that the weapon used in the robbery was a pellet gun.
Drake was charged with three counts of first-degree robbery, two counts of aggravated menacing and wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony.
He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $180,000 cash bail.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed any part of this incident, or who recovered any money lost by Drake while fleeing, to contact detectives at Troop 4 at (302) 856-5850, ext. 208.
