  • The Sussex Central Golden Knight softball squad improved to 2-0 on Saturday after defeating Red Lion CA, 4-2 behind a strong pitching performance from Mykala Steele.
Steele struck out 12 Red Lion batters and went the distance for her second complete game of the season to improve her overall record to 2-0.
Sussex Central was able to get an early run on the board in the 1st, taking a 1-0 lead before Red Lion had stepped up to the plate. After giving up the 1st inning run, Red Lion sophomore starting pitcher Shannon Brantley would match Central’s Steele over the next several innings.
In the bottom half of the 4th, Red Lion batted 2 runs across the plate to take a 2-1 lead over Sussex Central with just 3 innings to go. However, in the top half of the 5th inning, the Golden Knights would respond.
Morgan Smith would lead off the inning with a solo shot to tie things up. Then, Steele would help her own cause by getting on base, later scoring on a 2-base error after a hit by Paige Atkinson. With Atkinson on second base, freshmen Emily Truitt doubled her home to give Sussex Central a 4-2 lead.
After the 3-run 5th inning, Steele would take care of the rest for Central to preserve the 4-2 win.
The Golden Knights 4-2 win Saturday showed what kind of versatility this team may possess. While we’re only 2 games into the season, both of Sussex Central’s victories have been polar opposites of one another.
A week ago, the Golden Knights opened their season with an 8-6 slugfest victory over rival Sussex Tech. They followed up that performance with a hard-fought victory in a pitcher’s duel, where one big offensive inning was needed to win the ball game.
Now, Sussex Central begins an important part of their schedule with 5 straight games against conference opponents, two of which are against divisional opponents Caesar Rodney and Milford.
Yes, the season is still in its infancy, however, the Golden Knights are already well on their way to again returning to the state tournament. And seem to already be playing in mid-season form, poised for another deep run toward a possible state championship.
