  • The Delaware Society for the Prevention of Animals is hosting a "baby shower" to gather supplies for its Georgetown and Stanton shelters.
Each spring, the number of abandoned kittens and puppies increases dramatically, straining the organization's supplies and space.
"While cats and dogs have litters year-round, reproductive cycles are dramatically stimulated by warmer weather," said Bonnie Madonna, shelter manager for the SPCA's Georgetown facility. "For instance, an un-spayed adult female cat can give birth to multiple litters of kittens in a single spring season, creating a tremendous overpopulation problem. It is one of the hardest parts of working in animal care – dealing with so many homeless animals."
Individuals, youth groups, houses of worship, school groups, and local companies are all encouraged to hold supply drives. While all the donations help, specific needs include: Kitten Milk Replacer (KMR); wet kitten and puppy food; small plastic tubs that are 10 inches by 11 inches, or similar; microwavable heating pads like Snugglesafe; top loading cat carriers; wash cloths and baby cloth diapers; hand sanitizer; Lysol wipes; cat and dog toys; cat treats; kitten baby bottles; fleece blankets that are pet, baby, or twin size; and gift cards to grocery and pet supply stores.
The Delaware SPCA is a no-kill shelter that strains to place as many animals as possible. When it reaches capacity, it seeks foster parents to care for young animals it cannot house until they are able to be spayed or neutered at about eight weeks of age.
