It's never any fun working in corporate America for a blatant sexist boss, especially as a woman in the 1980s. The tyrant Franklin Hart Jr., president of Consolidated Industries, is a pro at making life miserable for his employees. He's on a roll now as he's still having an affair with his secretary, Doralee Rhodes, who loathes him. Not to mention, he passed up another opportunity to promote Consolidated supervisor Violet Newstead by instead promoting one of her trainees.
Though Judy Bernly is the new kid on the block at Consolidated, she can already feel the thick tension in the air, and she's already considering the chauvinist Hart as the main suspect. When Hart decides to play a cruel joke on one of the gals, they counter him, taking matters into their manicured hands. They kidnap him.
"It's the story of three women who confront sexism in the workplace in the early 1980s," said director Wesley Paulson, of Ocean Pines, Md. "They use comedy to tell the story, but these three women overcome the sexism and discrimination in the workplace."
A scene from the musical guaranteed to deliver laughs takes place before the girls detain Hart.
"There's a dream sequence in which the women have dreams about getting revenge on Mr. Hart in a fun way. I'll just leave it at that," beamed Paulson. "I don't want to spoil it. I think the dream sequence is one of the highlights of the show."
The musical is based on the 1980 namesake film starring Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda. The lyrics and music are written by Parton.
