Angelina Jolie announced in an op-ed article in the New York Times today that she had a preventative double mastectomy, CNN reports. Jolie discovered she carried a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which gave her an 87 percent chance of developing breast cancer and a 50 percent chance of developing ovarian cancer, according to her doctors' estimates. The 37-year-old Jolie's mother died of ovarian cancer at 56. Jolie reports that, after completing a double mastectomy and reconstruction, her breast cancer risk is now less than 5 percent.
