A 22-year-old Millsboro man was arrested May 15 after he allegedly assaulted a 27-year-old female victim in front of her five small children.
According to the Georgetown Police Department, police were summoned to the Classic Inn Motel around 6 a.m. for a domestic violence call. Police said Hershial L. Morris and the victim were reportedly involved in a verbal altercation the night before. Police said while the victim was sleeping, Morris allegedly grabbed her around the throat and started choking her. Police said the victim was able to get Morris off of her and attempted to call 911 on her cell phone. Police said Morris reportedly took the phone from her and threw it across the room. Police said a third party caller heard the struggle and called 911. Upon arrival, police said they heard what appeared to be a slap inside the room. Police said they made contact with Morris and the victim, and Morris admitted that he smacked one of the children because the child was not listening to him.
Police said Morris was taken into custody without further incident. Police said the victim had minor injuries to her neck, face, and arms, but refused medical treatment. There were no injuries located on the five children.
Police said Morris was charged with strangulation, assault, offensive touching, five counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and malicious interference with emergency communications. He was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institute in lieu of bond with a future court date.
