The 26-year-old Seaford man who allegedly damaged the fountain and other town property in an April 22 alcohol-related crash was arrested on May 14.
According to the Georgetown Police Department, an arrest warrant was obtained for Nestor Ramirez and he was taken into custody at his Seaford residence. Police said he was charged with DUI and numerous traffic offenses. He was released on an unsecured bond with a future court date.
According to the GPD, Ramirez was observed by police at about 2:45 a.m. operating a vehicle at a high rate of speed on W. Market Street. Police said the vehicle entered The Circle, but failed to turn right and continued heading east. Police said the vehicle struck a curb and a fire hydrant, then stopped on The Circle after striking the fountain.
Police said they could smell alcohol on Ramirez's breath, and he appeared to have received head injuries from the crash. He was transported to Beebe Medical Center for further evaluation.
Police said charges were pending the results of a blood test conducted on the day of the crash to determine whether Ramirez was indeed under the influence.
Police said Ramirez has been charged with traffic violations in the past, including a 2009 driving while under the influence of alcohol charge. Police said Ramirez does not have any criminal charges on his record.
