  • The Delaware State Police is investigating a May 26 incident in which a 24-year-old Bryn Mawr, Pa. man was struck by a DSP patrol vehicle on Coastal Highway in Dewey Beach.
Police said the incident occurred around 1:20 a.m., as Brian T. McDermott was walking in a northbound direction, straddling the edge of the shoulder and right travel lane of Coastal Highway southbound. Police said McDermott was struck by the right front corner of a southbound 2011 Ford Crown Victoria, fully marked patrol vehicle, operated by a 27-year-old male trooper assigned to Troop 7 in Lewes. The trooper’s name was not released.
Police said after the impact, McDermott was thrown to the roadway. Police said the trooper was able to provide emergency medical care until the arrival of emergency services personnel.
Police said McDermott was transported by helicopter to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he was admitted in critical condition.
Police said the trooper was properly restrained and not injured. Police said preliminary indications have determined that alcohol does appear to be a factor on the part of the pedestrian.
Police said Coastal Highway southbound at Rogers Avenue was closed for about three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. The incident is still under investigation.
