  • A 55-year-old Smyrna man was killed on June 8 after he was struck by a vehicle while walking his dogs on Coastal Highway just south of Old Bay Road.
According to the Delaware State Police, the incident occurred around 8:50 p.m. as 68-year-old R. Brandon Jones of Felton was operating a 2001 Jeep Wrangler southbound in the right lane on Coastal Highway. Police said Garabed D. Zakarian was walking with two dogs from the east side of the road to the west side, crossing Coastal Highway southbound. Police said as Zakarian stepped into the right lane of southbound Coastal Highway, he was struck by the Wrangler and thrown onto the southbound shoulder. Police said the Wrangler immediately pulled into the parking lot of Sea Esta IV Motel where it came to a controlled stop.
Police said Zakarian was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the two golden retriever dogs he was walking ran off, but both have since been located uninjured.
Police said Jones, who was properly restrained, was not injured in the crash.
