By winning the recent US Youth Soccer Delaware State Championships, the Henlopen Sharks soccer team from Milton, Del., has qualified to compete in the US Youth Soccer Region I (East) Championships, presented by the National Guard.
The team will be among the more than 256 top US Youth Soccer Boys and Girls teams from the 15 US Youth Soccer State Associations competing for the regional title, June 28-July 2 at the US Youth Soccer Region I Championships at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I. The US Youth Soccer Region I Championships, featuring top teams in the Under-12 through Under-19 age groups, begin Thursday, June 27, with opening ceremonies at Meade Stadium. Round robin games are Friday, June 28, through Sunday, June 30, with semifinal matches Monday, July 1. The US Youth Soccer Region I Champions will be crowned following final games on Tuesday, July 2.
US Youth Soccer State Cup champions and select runners-up from 15 State Associations in Region I, including host Soccer Rhode Island will participate. The other State Associations represented are Connecticut, Delaware, Eastern New York, Eastern Pennsylvania, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York West, Pennsylvania West, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.
Regional winners of the U-13 through U-19 age groups earn a berth to the 2013 US Youth Soccer National Championships, presented by the National Guard, July 22-28, at Overland Park Soccer Complex in Overland Park, Kan.
One of the 14 national crowns awarded is the James P. McGuire Cup, the oldest trophy in youth sport dating back to 1935 with the inaugural youth championships.
