A 66-year-old Pittsburg, Pa. woman was killed on June 21 after she was struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle on Coastal Highway, south of the Indian River Inlet Bridge in Bethany Beach.
According to the Delaware State Police, the crash occurred around 4:40 p.m. as Dorothy Brenner was riding a bicycle on the shoulder of northbound Coastal Highway. For unknown reasons, police said Brenner attempted to cross the northbound lanes in a diagonal direction from the shoulder towards a median crossover, into the path of a vehicle traveling northbound in the right lane. Police said the vehicle was able to aggressively brake and swerve to the left, avoiding Brenner. Police said the evasive maneuver, however, forced a 2007 Chevrolet Panel Van operated by 53-year-old Craig C. Thomas of Lewes, also traveling northbound, to brake and swerve to the left, striking Brenner and her bicycle. Police said Brenner was ejected from the bicycle onto the grass median.
Police said Brenner was pronounced dead at the scene and Thomas was properly restrained and not injured.
Police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this incident.
