A 37-year-old Rehoboth Beach man was killed July 11 after being struck by a bus on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach.
According to the Delaware State Police, the accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. as 58-year-old George A. Bryant of Milton was operating a 2010 Gillig Bus, owned by Delaware Transit Corporation, northbound on Coastal Highway approaching the intersection of Shuttle Road. Police said the bus was moving from the left travel lane into the left turn lane in order to make a left onto Shuttle Road. Police said Deepak P. Chatani was walking with his bicycle northbound in the roadway with his back to traffic and was struck by the bus from behind. Police said Chatani was thrown forward and landed against the east edge of the median while the bicycle was partially run over by the bus and remained lodged under the vehicle as it came to a controlled stop in the turn lane.
Police said Chatani was taken to Beebe Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Police said he was not carrying a flashlight while walking in the roadway, nor was one attached to his bicycle.
Police said Bryant was properly restrained and was not injured in the collision. The bus he was operating was empty at the time and was out of service. As per standard operating procedures for the Delaware Department of Transportation, Bryant was immediately taken to a local medical facility for drug and alcohol testing. DelDOT has not released the results of that testing.
Police are continuing to investigate this incident.
