  • A 25-year-old Long Neck woman who told police she was assaulted by two male subjects during a July 16 home invasion has been arrested for providing a false statement.
According to the Delaware State Police, Lauren T. Wingate confessed on July 18 that she had fabricated the whole story. Wingate originally told police that on July 16 around 1:15 p.m., two male suspects entered her residence on Lingo Drive and demanded cash. When she was unable to comply, Wingate claimed one man struck her in the face and, as they both left, they removed a handgun from the bedroom.
Police said when Wingate was re-interviewed on July 18, she told them she allowed the two men to enter the residence and remove her father’s pain medication as repayment of a drug debt. After she gave them the pills, Wingate said the men left. Wingate told police she removed the handgun and placed it into a bush next to her residence to make it look like a home invasion robbery so her father would not find out she was responsible for the missing drugs.
Wingate was charged with providing a false statement to a law enforcement officer, a felony. She was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $2,000 secured bond.
