A few years ago, folk-rocker and shameless "Star Wars" geek Melissa Cox wasn't familiar with one of Rehoboth Beach's best kept secrets: the Seafood Shack.
Looking for a place to perform in Rehoboth, Cox did a Google search for venues in the area and discovered the Shack. She's since fallen deeply in love with the quaint, cozy venue that dishes out scrumptious Maryland crab cakes. Cox has gigged at the Seafood Shack multiple times and her most recent was just this past spring.
Already feeling overdue for another concert there, Cox will journey back downstate for an encore on Aug. 2, in which her set will include originals inspired by Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), J.R.R. Tolkien (creator of "Lord of the Rings" series) and some Paul Simon covers.
"The thing I love about Seafood Shack is the intimate setting," Cox, of Newark, said about the Rehoboth venue, which seats approximately 30 people in its dining room. "I play five feet away from the audience. [There's] no stage, no lights, no illusions ─ just raw music and real connections. We joke and laugh and sing together. It's a great time."
At the Shack, Cox will perform "To Carrie Fisher, with Love" off her latest album, "Harmonious Maladies," released in 2011. "'Carrie Fisher' is about surviving as a touring musician and trying to have a sense of humor about it," said the 30-year-old Cox, who mocks Lady Gaga in the comedic music video.
The song was born from a maddening tour she took in 2010 with her singer-songwriter friend, Reign Lee, which encompassed Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California in less than a month.
"When I was on [that] 5,000-mile tour a couple years ago, I kind of went crazy," Cox said. "We had 16 shows in 14 days and I don't know what we were thinking. The only thing that got me through it was eating chocolate and listening to Carrie's Fishers audio book, 'Wishful Drinking.' She's hilarious."
