  • A 46-year-old Plymouth, NC man was arrested Aug. 15 for allegedly smuggling more than 370 cartons of cigarettes through Delaware.
    According to the Delaware Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement, Mohamed A. Shamalah was traveling on U.S. Route 13 through Laurel when he was stopped for a traffic violation. Officials said during the stop, officers from the Laurel Police Department detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and took Shamalah into custody. A subsequent search of Shamalah’s vehicle uncovered the suspected marijuana and 379 cartons of cigarettes.
    DATE agents determined Shamalah purchased the cigarettes in North Carolina and Virginia for about $20,000 and was transporting them to an unknown destination.
    Shamalah was charged with possession of untaxed cigarettes, attempting to evade Delaware excise tax and possession of drug paraphernalia. DATE seized a 2002 Volvo 4S, the cigarettes and $432 in cash. Shamalah was also issued a traffic citation. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $8,000 cash bail.
