Sussex Tech High School
2012 Record: 9-6
Returning Impact Players: Logan Troyer, Alayna Villa, Para Washam, Peyton Farrall, Nena Burt, Maddie Troyer
Key Newcomers: Stephanie Foresman, Logan Downes, Holly Anderson, Breanna Perry, Morganne Partyka, Sam Vest, Kaitlyn Neibert
Season Outlook: The Ravens had a solid 9-6 season last year, but it wasn’t good enough to get them into the DIAA state tournament. Unfortunately, Tech stumbled a bit toward the end of the season losing 2 of their final 3 games barely missing the playoffs. After losing 6 seniors, the Ravens will look for new leaders to step into the roles left behind. With only 4 possible seniors on the squad, the Ravens will lean heavily on some of their returning underclassmen such as Peyton Farrall, Para Washam, and Nena Burt. With a nice mix of youth and experience, Sussex Tech should compete in the Henlopen North as well as the conference with hopes of earning a state tournament berth.
Coach’s Quote: “One of the expectations is of course being able to compete well,” said Sussex Tech head coach Joe Hearn. “We have strength in our defensive skills and more options on offense this year. We have a strong camaraderie among players that I am hoping will take us to a winning season.”
Sussex Central High School
Nickname: Golden Knights
2012 Record: 8-7
Returning Impact Players: Keyaira Jenkins, April Owens, Jeannie Perkins-Phillips, Morgan Smith, Shelby Wilkins
Key Newcomers: Emily Truitt
Season Outlook: The Sussex Central Golden Knights enter a brand new volleyball season coming off an 8-7 record last year. After a sluggish start to last season, losers of four of their first five games, the Golden Knights were able to finish strong winning five of their final six match ups. Central will have to replace some important players from their squad, losing Cyndie Givens, Jeralyne Hyland, and Jordan Willey to graduation. The Golden Knights look to turn things around for their program, as they haven’t seen the state tournament in 4 seasons. Whether or not they can accomplish that goal will depend solely on how the new leadership and contributing underclassmen do in an increased role.
2012 Record: 11-4
Returning Impact Players: Angela Baker, Bailey Kinnikin, Mackenzie Kinnikin
Key Newcomers: Olivia Anderson, Mia Brown, Raelynn Ferencsik, Abby Johnson, Savannah Mills, Lydia Rimmer, Lizzie Stevens, Jillian Yi, Allie Zitvogel
Season Outlook: For the fourth straight season, the Delmarva Christian Royals volleyball squad made the DIAA state tournament. And for the fourth straight season, they were eliminated in the first round of the tournament. Looking to change those fortunes, the Royals begin another season on the court and they do so with a revamped roster. After losing impact players Lauryl Berger, Madelyn Gilbert, Jessica Hassett, Kelsey McMunn, and Megan Gherke to graduations, the Royals will have practically a brand new lineup with they open up the season on Friday, September 6. The Royals will have to depend upon improved play from their new seniors and hope to see contributions from the large number of underclassmen they have added to the team.
