  • Standing tall at W.B. Atkin Ball Park in Millsboro on Saturday, the Great Millsboro Chamber of Commerce stepped up to the plate and presented its inaugural Millsboro Country Festival.
The Chamber knocked the event out of the park, drawing a crowd of roughly 3,000 people, said GMCC Executive Director Amy Simmons.
The popularity of the festival means the chamber will return with it next year, with the intentions of making it an annual affair.
"I'm pleasantly surprised," Simmons said. "I was overwhelmed with the number of people that were there."
The success of the Millsboro Country Festival was anchored by its redneck/hillbilly theme.
For starters, the festival's staff generated a buzz with their matching camouflage hunting T-shirts. Festivalgoers couldn't keep their eyes off the tees. "We had people offering to pay us for the shirts," said Simmons, who added the shirts will likely be for sale at next year's festival.
Major highlights of the event included a replica of the famed General Lee car from "The Dukes of Hazzard" TV series. There was also an autograph-signing and photo-op with "The Dukes of Hazzard" star Ben Jones, who played Cooter the mechanic on the series. Jones headlined the festival's concert with his group, Cooter's Garage Band.
"The Dukes of Hazzard" fan John Shoemaker endured a long line in the heat for Jones' autograph.
"I got him to sign two license plates that we'll put in our memorabilia auction for our church," said Shoemaker, of Felton.
The Millsboro Country Festival's offbeat contests and activities also drew attention. Activities and contests included the toilet-seat horseshoe toss; Hill Billy's Got Talent; trashcan bowling (use car tires as bowling balls and trashcans as pins); Rust Bucket Parade; Tic Tac Toe with car tires; and the Redneck Super Challenge (a timed event where participants are tasked with performing silly tasks like tossing toilet paper into an empty toilet bowl to rolling car tires back and forth).
