  • A Dagsboro Volunteer Fire Department junior firefighter who died in the line of duty last year will be honored Oct. 6 at the 32nd Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Emmitsburg, Md.
Justin E. Townsend, 17 at the time of his death, is among 73 firefighters who died in 2012 and eight who died in previous years who will be remembered at the official national service held at the National Fire Academy. Townsend died in a motor vehicle accident on Sept. 27, 2012 while responding to the station for an outdoor fire.
The names of those firefighters who died in the line of duty will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial on the Academy grounds. The national tribute is sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the Department of Homeland Security.
More than 5,000 people, including members of Congress, administration officials and other dignitaries, members of the fire service, and family and friends of the fallen firefighters are expected to attend. Families will receive flags flown over the U.S. Capitol and the National Memorial. Members of the fire service, honor guard units and pipe and drum units from across the U.S. will participate in the national tribute.
