  • Beebe Medical Center's Tunnell Cancer Center is hosting a free prostate cancer screening Oct. 17 for men who qualify at the Beebe Health Campus on Route 24 in Rehoboth Beach.
One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Owen Thomas, MD, said men between the ages of 50 and 70 should be tested because they are at higher risk. The prostate specific antigen test, a blood test for prostate cancer, can determine if you have a higher risk for prostate cancer.
Some possible benefits of a PSA test: A PSA test may find prostate cancer early before it has spread; early treatment of prostate cancer may help some men slow the spread of the disease; early treatment may help some men live longer.
Some risks associated with the PSA test: The PSA test is not perfect. A normal PSA test may miss some prostate cancers; Sometimes the test results suggest something is wrong when it isn't - a false positive; false positive test may lead to an unnecessary prostate biopsy.
    Pre-registration is required.
