  • A 46-year-old Lewes woman died Oct. 2 when the tractor trailer she was driving ran off the road and crashed head-on into two trees.
According to the Delaware State Police, the incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. as Colette M. Childers was operating a 2005 International Pro Start truck for Mountaire Farms southbound on U.S. Route 113 just south of Kruger Road in Georgetown. Police said for unknown reasons, the truck drove off the right edge of the roadway and head-on into two trees before coming to a stop.
Police said Childers, who was properly restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said prior to the crash, motorists in the area of Ellendale and north Georgetown began calling 911 to report the truck driving erratically. Police said at one point the truck crossed into the median strip before continuing southbound on U.S. Route 113.
The crash is still under investigation.
