  • Five men who identified themselves to police as Sussex County firefighters were arrested Oct. 4 for using watermelons to smash mailboxes in Bishopville, Md.
According to the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, a call came in around 1:15 a.m. from a Bishopville resident regarding several people riding around in a dark-colored truck smashing mailboxes. Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office along with troopers from the Maryland State Police located the pick-up truck traveling on Saint Martin’s Neck Road near Md. Route 90. Police said they stopped the vehicle and located four people in the bed of the truck, as well as the driver.
The men, who identified themselves as Sussex County firefighters, were 28-year-old Stewart William Pryor of Millsboro, 19-year-old Dylan Lee Sharp of Milton, 23-year-old Franklin Adam Martin of Milton, 23-year-old Sean James MaGee of Selbyville and 22-year-old Addison Hill-Bitner of Rehoboth Beach.
Also in the truck, police said, were 29 watermelons. Police began traveling the roads of Bishopville and found a total of 14 U.S. mailboxes, one waste management trash can and one sign for a church parsonage damaged. Police said an investigation revealed the men were riding along Bishopville and Saint Martin’s Neck roads throwing watermelons at mailboxes in an attempt to destroy them.
Police said all of the men were arrested and charged with malicious destruction of property.
