Smyrna HS defeated Delmarva Christian 3-0 in HS volleyball

Delmarva Christian High School fell to Smyrna 3-0 last Wednesday afternoon on the road.

The Lady Royals are working through a rebuilding year. They currently have a 2-9 record, but have split their last four matches. Last year, Delmarva had an 11-4 record and made the DIAA state volleyball tournament. The 8-3 Lady Eagles, meanwhile, have now won five consecutive matches, all in straight sets.

In the first set, the Royals served first, and built a 4-2 lead, but the Eagles got control at 10-8 and eventually moved out to an 18-12 advantage. The Royals then managed to get within 19-16, but a Raven Luckett spike gave Smyrna the momentum to finish the first set at 25-17.

The Eagles controlled the second set from the outset. After establishing an 8-6 lead, Smyrna then dominated play from that point, moving from a 14-8 lead, and they continued to play well and move the score to 20-9 behind the play of Morgan Popovich, Kylie McKusker and Hannah Boyles. The Eagles finished the set with a 25-14 score.

In the third set, the Royals played well and led in the early going 7-3, but the Eagles soon reversed the momentum. After tying the score at 7-7, the Smyrna squad continued to play well, moving from a 12-11 lead, then a 16-11 lead before closing out the third set, and the match, at 25-17.
