  • A 76-year-old Selbyville man died Oct. 22 after an apparent hunting accident in Bishopville, Md.
According to Candy Thomson of the Maryland Natural Resources Police, Richard Jenkins fell from a tree stand while deer hunting. Thomson said the tree stand is located just over the state line, about four miles from Jenkins' home. Jenkins left to go hunting around 6 a.m. and when he did not return by 4 p.m., his wife asked a friend to check on him. Thomson said the friend found Jenkins lying on a cement pad at the foot of the tree stand ladder. Jenkins was not wearing a safety vest or harness.
In addition to the NRP, the Worcester County Sheriff's Office and Bishopville Emergency Services responded to the scene around 4:20 p.m. Thomson said investigators found a broken rung on the metal ladder about nine feet off the ground. The tree stand itself, she said, is about 11 feet off the ground.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore determined Jenkins died as a result of multiple injuries. His death was ruled accidental.
