Sussex Central High School announced earlier this school year that they were to begin recognizing their school’s athletes each month by picking both a boys and girls athlete of the month.
For the first month of the school year, the Golden Knights picked two highly talented seniors, Tarez White and Ashley Berry.
Listed at just 5’9” and 150lbs, Tarez White may not be ideal size to play football but he’s certainly made an impact on the Golden Knights football squad. With the ability to play multiple positions on offense, as well as playing defensive back, White has shown tremendous versatility this season, scoring in nearly every way possible on the football field.
White has helped Sussex Central to a 3-4 record so far this season with three games remaining against Polytech, Cape Henlopen, and Indian River.
While the Golden Knight’s field hockey squad has struggled this season, Ashley Berry has taken on the role of leader for the building program. As the only senior, Berry has taken it upon herself to help lead this group of younger players in hopes laying the ground work for success in the future.
While the Golden Knights don’t have a victory yet in field hockey, Berry has no doubt helped the growth of some of the team’s younger players, showing unselfishness in the face of adversity.
“It’s definitely an honor to be chosen as athlete of the month,” said Berry. “Being the only senior I do my best to help the younger players along and I think the future looks bright.”
For White, he knows how to use his skill set to his advantage while using his size as motivation. Also, White attributes his success to being on the same page with quarterback Amontay Clanton.
“People look at my size all the time,” said White. “I can use that as motivation but I know what I can do out there, and (Amontay and I) have been on the same page all year.”
Both seniors intend to attend college after they graduate, while also trying their hand at college athletics.
You can see White back in action on football field this Friday night when the Golden Knights host Polytech at 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Berry will play her final field hockey game as a Golden Knight on Thursday when Central visits Milford at 4:00 p.m.
