  • A 5K Run & Walk to benefit Haiti’s earthquake victims will be held Nov. 9 in Greenwood.
The massive earthquake in January 2010 killed over 200,000 people and caused severe destruction in the country. Event volunteers say while much progress has been made, many people never recovered from the event. Chickens for Haiti 5K Run & Walk will help fund mini-loans, training and resources for Haitians to build chicken houses and raise chickens for a living.
Volunteers say the vast majority of chicken in Haiti is imported, resulting in high prices. Live chickens sell in Haiti markets for between $5 and $10 or more each. The chicken house mini-loans are a project of the Christian Fellowship Mission, an organization serving Haiti since 1966. Each chicken house will be able to raise 300 chickens and costs $3,000. Each new Haitian farmer will be required to pay back the cost of their chicken house, replenishing the funds to build more houses.
Registration and packet pickup for the 5K Walk & Run begins at 7 a.m., with the race starting at 8 a.m. Pre-registration is $20 and same-day registration is $25. The race will begin behind the post office, next to Yoder’s County Store on Market Street. Participants can register at www.chickensforhaiti.com or in person at Yoder’s Country Store.
